REDCASTLE HOUSE

The site is located in the gently rolling landscape of County Donegal overlooking the wide expanse of the River Foyle.

The layout is conceived as 2 simple elements arranged to create the enclosure associated with Irish vernacular clusters, creating visual connections with the rolling landscape. The first element, containing only bedrooms, is positioned to deal with the sloping landscape and create an enclosed courtyard on arrival. The second living element is lowered to create double height spaces to draw in the the surrounding views.

The entrance penetrates the void between these elements. The forms and materiality are derived from the language of local vernacular homes and agricultural buildings.

The interaction of topography, along with the material expression and diverse architectural / agricultural mix provides a contemporary, yet traditional, architecture
