WATERLOO STREET

Work has started on the redevelopment of a derelict building in Derry City Centre to create 19 homes that are ideally suited to active older people over 55. The scheme will be designed to Lifetime Homes and Secured by Design standards, which ensure added security and flexibility of adaptation if required at a later date.

The building lies close to the historic core of Derry, set as an architectural marker at the junction between Waterloo Street and Waterloo Place. Under this proposal, the external fabric of the building will be replaced with a modern palette of materials including stone features, white render and architectural panelling. New windows and screens renew the principles of the original building and a new simple feature architectural panel is constructed signalling the public entrance.

The new building is derived from the original, emphasising it's rhythm and proportion, but executed in white render with stone features, creating a simple repeated pattern of voids. The use of white render piers as the expression of the vertical structure at once acknowledges the tradition and spirit of the traditional features of Waterloo Street.

The building which was formerly used as office accommodation, which has been derelict for a number of year when complete will provide modern, city centre living, combining a convenient location. The existing ground floor retail units will be retained and the current occupiers will continue to operate as normal throughout the construction period.
